R+L Carriers is a family-owned transportation company based in Wilmington, Ohio. Its terminals are spread across the United States, so customers can rely on one network whether their freight stays in its home state or crosses the country.
That reach is the result of six decades of steady growth: from a single truck in Ohio to a carrier that serves businesses nationwide.
From one truck to a national network
R+L grew one region and one acquisition at a time.
1965: one truck
Ralph L. “Larry” Roberts buys a single truck to haul furniture, then acquires intrastate and interstate operating authority from Mayflower Moving and Storage. That authority is the foundation of what becomes R+L Carriers, Inc.
Early 1980s: deregulation
Trucking deregulation opens the freight industry to new competition, and the company takes shape as R+L Carriers, Inc. It expands from Ohio into other Midwestern and Southern states.
1989: Gator Freightways
The acquisition of Gator Freightways, Inc. significantly strengthens R+L’s presence in the Southern states.
1992: Greenwood Motor Lines
Greenwood Motor Lines, Inc. joins R+L Carriers, extending the network further.
1996: Herder Truck Lines
R+L buys Herder Truck Lines, Inc., a Texas-based carrier. Through the 1990s it adds terminals every year, and within five years its terminals and services reach the New York boroughs and 23 more states.

Use our tools
Freight density calculator
Calculate your density
Density is the weight of your load divided by its volume in cubic feet, measured in pounds per cubic foot (PCF). To get cubic feet, multiply length, width, and height in inches and divide by 1,728. Density points to a freight class, though the class can also depend on handling, liability, and stowability, all of which affect the rate.
Enter one piece’s dimensions, the total weight, and the number of pieces, and the calculator works out the cubic feet, the density, and the class it points to.
